Section Officers� Examination is conducted by the UPSC. Candidates who have put in 5 years service in the Grade of Assistants/PAs in Central Secretariat or other Central Government Departments are eligible to appear for these exams. There were no comprehensive books for these examinations. To fill up the void, Shri V. Sivaprakasam brought out the book �Companion for SO Examinations� which has been a complete guide, covering all the papers, except Noting & Drafting. The other book, �Noting and Drafting, Precis Writing� is an elaborate guide with model formats of communications, solved questions on NOTING AND DRAFTING. Besides, it contains a number of previous questions on PRECIS WRITING with their solutions. The third book �Question Bank for S.O. Exams with some solved papers� contains exam-strategy and collection of question papers of previous years. This provides candidates adequate idea for the preparation.
This year, the UPSC has notified (1.10.2011) changes in the pattern of SO Exams. Consequently, there will be only THREE papers instead of FIVE. The paper on Noting and Drafting, Precis Writing will continue to be in DESCRIPTIVE TYPE ( Now for 200 marks for 3 hours). The other two papers, in OBJECTIVE TYPE, will be for 2 hours & for 150 marks each. The General Studies-paper will cover the Constitution of India, Machinery of Government, Parliamentary Procedure, Allocation of Business Rules, R.T.I. Act, 2005, Five-Year Plans, Indian Economy, Major Developmental Schemes, including Rural Development programmes, National and International Current Affairs. The other one will be a Paper on Service and Financial Rules. This will include questions on various Rules plus Office Procedure.
The Candidates should be aware that though the Questioning pattern has been changed from descriptive to objective, they have to acquire complete knowledge on all the above subjects and should not be selective in their studies to achieve success. This Book contains Objective Questions pertaining to Paper 1 and Paper 2 introduced from 2012. The Answer key can be downloaded from our website or UPSC website. Since the pattern of questions on NOTING AND DRAFTING, PRECIS WRITING continues to be in DESCRIPTIVE TYPE, this book continues to be relevant and useful, more especially, as the value of this paper has been doubled, past questions will serve as a guide for systematic preparation for this paper.
